WORKING PRINCIPLE

The LT1070HVCT#PBF works on the PWM switching principle. When the regulator is on, a power transistor is connected in series between the input and output. At this time, the current will flow through the inductor to the load. When the transistor is switched off, current will flow through the inductor to the output capacitor and the output voltage will be generated.

The pulse width modulation (PWM) circuit in the regulator is used to control the switching of the power transistor. A sawtooth waveform is generated by the ramp generator, while the other input is the error signal. Together, they enable the PWM to compare the error voltage and the sawtooth waveforms. If the error signal is larger than the sawtooth waveform, the PWM will activate the triac and switch on the power transistor; if not, then the power transistor will be switched off. This switching will happen at a high frequency, about 50KHz in this case.

Moreover, the LT1070HVCT#PBF integrates a foldback current-limiting circuit for short-circuit protection, which can effectively limit the current to reduce the output voltage and ensure the surge current won’t break the power transistor. It also has a thermal shutdown circuit that will automatically turn off the output when the regulator gets too hot and protect it from being damaged.

CONNECTIONS
