PMIC - Voltage Regulators - Linear is a type of voltage regulator whose output voltage varies linearly as the target output voltage varies. The LT1117CST-5#TRPBF is a single 5V fixed output linear regulator that is ideal for use in applications where reliability, low cost and low power consumption are essential. The LT1117CST-5#TRPBF is a low-dropout (LDO) linear regulator and can deliver up to 1.2A of output current. It can operate from a wide input voltage range of 1.8V to 16V and provides a ±1.5% output voltage accuracy that is adjustable over a 0.2V to 5V range.

The LT1117CST-5#TRPBF is designed to deliver superior performance even in the most extreme operating conditions. With a very low quiescent current of only 35μA and a very low output noise of 20μVRMS, the LT1117CST-5#TRPBF provides excellent performance in low power applications such as cell phones, portable medical devices, consumer electronics and embedded systems. In extreme temperature and high ambient light conditions, the LT1117CST-5#TRPBF maintains its excellent performance with low output voltage drift and high output voltage accuracy.

The LT1117CST-5#TRPBF also offers comprehensive protection features and can withstand up to 16V input voltage transients. It is also capable of supporting both positive and negative switch-over outputs with its low on-resistance MOSFETs. Protection features include short-circuit protection, reverse input voltage protection, thermal protection and output over-current protection. Furthermore, the LT1117CST-5#TRPBF features a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to 125°C.

The LT1117CST-5#TRPBF’s working principle is based on the principle of capacitive / resistive voltage divider. The divider is created by a series connection of a fixed input capacitor and selectable output resistor. When the input voltage is applied to the divider, the output voltage is proportional to the input voltage as divided by the output resistor. The on-chip, adjustable output voltage can then be adjusted by changing the value of the output resistor. The regulator is designed with a bandgap voltage reference, current sink and an error amplifier, which cancels out any discrepancy between the output resistor and the reference voltage, keeping the output voltage constant. The LT1117CST-5#TRPBF also has an ultra-fast response time of 0.3 microseconds, making it suitable for use in fast switching applications.
