PMIC - Voltage Regulators - Linear is a type of voltage regulator whose output voltage varies linearly as the target output voltage varies. The LT1117CST-5#TRPBF is a single 5V fixed output linear regulator that is ideal for use in applications where reliability, low cost and low power consumption are essential. The LT1117CST-5#TRPBF is a low-dropout (LDO) linear regulator and can deliver up to 1.2A of output current. It can operate from a wide input voltage range of 1.8V to 16V and provides a ±1.5% output voltage accuracy that is adjustable over a 0.2V to 5V range.

The LT1117CST-5#TRPBF’s working principle is based on the principle of capacitive / resistive voltage divider. The divider is created by a series connection of a fixed input capacitor and selectable output resistor. When the input voltage is applied to the divider, the output voltage is proportional to the input voltage as divided by the output resistor. The on-chip, adjustable output voltage can then be adjusted by changing the value of the output resistor. The regulator is designed with a bandgap voltage reference, current sink and an error amplifier, which cancels out any discrepancy between the output resistor and the reference voltage, keeping the output voltage constant.
