The LT1120CN8#PBF is an integrated linear regulator specifically designed for low noise and low dropout applications. The device utilizes a patented cascode circuit configuration that utilizes a pair of common source transistors in order to provide dropout voltage levels as low as 20mV (typical) and fast transient response at load current steps of up to 200mA. Application Field
The LT1120 is primarily designed for use in audio, video and telecommunications equipment, allowing aggressive power saving when the output voltage is low. Working Principle
The LT1120CN8#PBF is an excellent low dropout regulator, utilizing a patented cascode circuit which uses two common source transistors to provide dropout voltage levels as low as 20mV (typical). The device operates between 2.8V and 6V, providing a precisely regulated output voltage up to 5.8V. The LT1120 offers fast, accurate and reliable performance, with a maximum load current of 200mA and maximum dropout voltage of 20mV. Its pin-compatible version, the LT1117, offers adjustable and fixed output voltage options.
The LT1120 is designed to address very low dropout voltage requirements and provides superior PSRR performance over the entire audio frequency range. The device operates with a very low operating current and fast transient response times, making it ideally suited to noise sensitive applications. To ensure reliable operation over temperature and longterm stability, the device incorporates an internal error amplifier, reverse current protection, thermal shutdown and an output short-circuit protection. Additionally, an internal voltage reference provides a temperature coefficient of only 20ppm/°C over the specified temperature range.
The LT1120CN8#PBF features an improved power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) and a very low input offset voltage, in addition to its low noise and low operating current characteristics. As a result, the LT1120 is wellsuited to applications demanding very low noise and low quiescent current operation. The LT1120 is also very efficient in operation, with typical efficiency exceeding 90% in many applications.
The LT1120CN8#PBF includes an integrated output linear current limiter, which is triggered when a short circuit or excessive load is applied to the output. The current-limiting circuit includes a counter, which limits the load current to a safe maximum level, while still protecting the device from thermal damage. An external resistor can be used to set the maximum output current threshold. The LT1120CN8#PBF also features protections against reverse voltage, overvoltage, overcurrent, and thermal overload.
