LT1676CS8#PBF is a high-performance synchronous step-down regulator. Switching regulator or switch-mode power supply (SMPS) is a type of DC/DC converter that rapidly switches on and off a MOSFET, in order to efficiently convert the incoming energy into a steady output voltage. It belongs to step-down switching regulator and operating at a frequency anywhere from a few kHz to a few MHz. This connector is suitable for a wide range of applications from high-end servers, industrial automation, and smart grid.
Application Field
This general-purpose regulator provides excellent power solutions for many home and industrial applications. It can be used for automotive, industrial, communications, computer, and consumer electronics. Its flexibility makes it ideal for multi-output power applications. This device supports a wide input voltage range from 3V to 24V, and its high voltage input range makes it suitable for applications such as microcontroller supply, notebook computers, computer systems and other battery-powered equipment.
It also provides an integrated output voltage discharge switch, suitable for applications such as solar microinverters, motor control, and power amplifiers, eliminating the need for a battery-fueled external discharge switch. This can provide a safe system shutdown when the battery is unplugged.
Working Principle
It works on a hysteretic regulator control principle. This is a variation of the standard linear regulator. The output voltage is regulated by a comparator that is triggered continually at a given frequency. This comparator switches on and off the MOSFET, which switches the output on and off very rapidly. This determines the amount of current that is fed to the load with each cycle of the switch. During the ON cycle, the current fed to the load increases and during the OFF cycle, the current decreases.
The MOSFET is also controlled by a feedback signal from the loop. When the output voltage decreases, the comparator activates an internal feedback signal that increases the current fed through the MOSFET, and hence increases the output voltage. Similarly, when the output voltage increases, the current fed through the MOSFET is decreased and hence the output voltage decreases. Thus, both the comparator and the feedback loop are responsible for maintaining the desired output voltage.
This device also provides a wide output adjustment range which helps it operate accurately over a wide range of input and output voltages. The output voltage can also be adjusted using an external resistor divider, allowing the user to adjust the output voltage to a specific level without any external controls.
