The LT1767EMS8E#PBF is a high efficiency, step-down switching regulator that allows for very small size and low input/output voltage differential. The device is capable of high speed switching at up to 1.5MHz, a wide adjustable output up to 8.2V while requiring only 2.5V input voltage, and power up to 40W.

The functional blocks of the device are a reference, clock, power switch, comparator, oscillator, current limit, output control, output driver, PWM control, and thermal protection. The reference consists of an on-chip low dropout voltage regulator and an on-chip voltage reference that supplies the reference voltage for the PWM control circuit. The clock and oscillator consist of an external clock source, an on-chip clock oscillator, an auto-calibration system, and an internal clock generator.

The power switch is composed of a MOSFET (N-channel enhancement mode) that is capable of operating up to 1.2V. The comparator accelerates the UV loop, which regulates the output voltage and provides sense and feedback. The current-limit comparator is designed to protect the MOSFET switch and the inductor. The output control circuitry controls the turning ON and OFF of the power switch and adjusts the output voltage.

The output driver is specifically designed to minimise inductor ringing and to ensure fast dynamic response during heavy load transitions. In addition, the output driver circuitry helps to bring the power switch to its off state quickly. The PWM control circuit pulses the power switch on and off according to the user-defined operating frequency and is adjustable from 350kHz to 1.5MHz. The thermal protection is an on-chip feature which monitors the temperature of the internal MOSFET and prevents damaging thermal runaway.
