Introduction

The LT3511EMS#PBF is one of Linear Technology\'s buck-boost series DC-DC switching regulators featuring current mode control for excellent load and line regulation over a wide input voltage range. It operates over a input voltage range of 3V to 60V and provides regulated output voltages of 0.8V to 55V adjustable. A unique feature of the LT3511EMS#PBF is that it can be configured as either a buck-boost, boost, buck, or a fLYBACK regulator. It can also be used as a single phase forward converter.

Working Principle

The LT3511EMS#PBF Buck-Boost Converter is a current mode switching regulator, which is widely used in power electronics due to its high accuracy and stability. The main function of the current mode switching regulator is to regulate the output voltage of a power source to a desired level, by varying the current at the output side. To accomplish this, a hysteresis comparator from the current sense signal will switch the power MOSFETs ON and OFF, to get the desired output voltage. This switching causes a voltage drop across the MOSFETs which is dissipated in the form of heat. Therefore, these regulators should be operated with adequate provision for heat dissipation.

The LT3511EMS#PBF Buck-Boost converter provides two outputs (Vout1 and Vout2). The two outputs are isolated and can be independently regulated. Each output is controlled by three loop circuits: Overcurrent protection, Soft-start/Remote On-Off and Feedback/Error amp. The Overcurrent Protection loop monitors the current in the MOSFETs terminals to protect the converter from excessive current. The SoftStart circuits allows the regulator to start or remotely shut down. The Feedback/Error amp circuit monitors the output voltage, compares it to the reference voltage and provides control signals for the voltage loop.

The LT3511EMS#PBF Buck-Boost Converters are designed to meet high efficiency requirements and can achieve up to 95% efficiency, with an input voltage range of 3V to 60V. They also feature internal feedback resistors, allowing for very low output noise and low external parts count. These Buck-Boost regulator have integrated protection features such as Under-Voltage Lockout (UVLO) and Brown-Out Protection (BOP) and operate over a wide temperature range of -40°C to +125°C.
