PMIC - Voltage Regulators - DC DC Switching Controllers
The LT3791IFE-1#PBF is a single-phase step-down regulator with integrated MOSFET from Linear Technology’s family of high-performance linear voltage regulators. This regulator operates over a wide input voltage range of 5V to 52V and provides adjustable output voltages from 0.6V to 44V at currents up to 10 A. The LT3791IFE-1#PBF has two external control pins, FB and CT, to monitor and control the output voltage, allowing applications with synchronous rectification. It integrates a soft-start/hiccup current limitation/undervoltage lockout circuit.
Applications
The LT3791IFE-1#PBF is designed for high efficiency and excellent thermal performance making this regulator ideal for a variety of applications such as power supplies, data converters, and high-current applications. It is suitable for powering microprocessors and other high-frequency applications. This device also features an external temperature monitor and wide range of protections against over-current, over-temperature, and over-voltage.
Working Principle
The LT3791IFE-1#PBF uses a constant frequency, current-mode control architecture. It is capable of operating in the continuous inductor current mode, the discontinuous inductor current mode, and in the skip cycle Burst Mode operation mode. The LT3791IFE-1#PBF provides a non-latching, cycle-by-cycle current limit to protect the converter and load under overload conditions, and it implements adjustable soft-start. The device has two control pins, FB and CT, to control the output voltage and an external temperature monitor.
The FB pin is used to loop back the output voltage of the regulator for regulation purposes. The FB pin is connected to the output voltage through a voltage divider and the voltage error is amplified by the error amplifier. The CT pin is a control voltage input whose feedback voltage is used to adjust the switching frequency. The switching frequency can be adjusted from 200 kHz to 500 kHz, allowing the user to set the output voltage under different input and load conditions.
The LT3791IFE-1#PBF integrates a MOSFET driver, a synchronous rectification logic, and a current sense amplifier, providing high efficiency and excellent thermal performance. The device allows active PWM current-mode control, providing very fast transient response and improved line/load regulation. The device also employs a hiccup current limit circuitry to reduce the over-temperature risk during an overload condition. Additionally, the LT3791IFE-1#PBF has an adjustable UVLO circuit. If the supply voltage drops to the lower UVLO threshold, the device will start up again when the voltage rises back above the upper UVLO threshold.
