Overview

The LT3796HFE is an integrated high current step-up driver that enables excellent efficiency and dimming performance by minimizing power losses, with very low EMI noise even in such high-voltage applications. It is capable of driving three to four strings of LEDs, with a total output current of up to 5A, and can drive more than 10 LEDs. The LT3796HFE operates in the quasi-resonant mode, where it switches at a fixed frequency to reduce EMI and can operate at low duty cycle of 0.1% allowing for very low light level control.The LT3796HF’s soft-start control helps reduce inrush current when the LEDs are turned on, while the thermal protection circuitry prevents thermal runaway in the event of a short circuit or overload. It also integrates with an adjustable current sensing element to help ensure low light color shift.

Operation

The LT3796HFE is designed to work in the quasi-resonant mode, which is a combination of CCM (Continuous Conduction Mode) and DCM (Discontinuous Conduction Mode) operation. It operates at a fixed frequency and reduces power losses by switching at resonant frequency when operating at a low duty cycle. The frequency of operation can be adjusted from 100Khz to 200Khz, depending on the filter inductor used and the output current.The wide dimming range is achieved by varying the output voltage at 20V/ms rate, using a current sensing element to detect the output current. The current sensing element helps to provide an accurate output current, with minimal light color shifts, even when operating at very low duty cycles (down to 0.1%).The LT3796HFE also integrates an adjustable soft-start and over-current protection. The adjustable soft-start reduces the inrush current when the LEDs are first turned on, allowing for a smooth LED startup, while the over-current protection prevents thermal runaways in the event of a short circuit or overload, helping to ensure the safety of the LED system.
