LTC1384IN#PBF is a single supply RS-232/RS-422/RS-485 transceiver with +/-15 kV ESD protection. This driver/receiver/transceiver IC is designed for use in a wide array of interface applications which need bi-directional data transfer. It offers adjustable slew rate control and differential voltage amplitudes to minimize system line noise. With its built-in thermal protection and the protection from ESD, the LTC1384IN#PBF is highly suitable to be used in a wide range of data communications applications.The LTC1384IN#PBF is widely adopted as an interface device in various automotive, medical, industrial and consumer applications. Examples of such applications include motor control, autonomous robots, data acquisition, industrial automation, and point-of-sale systems. It is also used in some applications to support data flow between two or more systems, such as point-to-point remote links, serial communications, and various bus protocols, including LIN, CAN, and I2C.The device is available in multiple packages, including, but not limited to DIP, SOIC, and TSSOP. It is operational with an input voltage of 3.3 V to 15V and a temperature range of -40 °C to +125 °C. The transceiver supports up to 10Mbps data transmission rate and supports up to four external receivers. The LTC1384IN#PBF is based on a CMOS technology, which contributes to the low supply current consumption of the device. It offers selectable transmit/receive modes and supports logic-level translation between two systems. The built-in shutdown feature allows the device to be manually disabled when not in use, thus reducing standby power consumption. The LTC1384IN#PBF features a typical rise and fall time of less than one microsecond, allowing it to perform up to a 10Mbps data transfer rate and support speeds up to 1Mbps. Its maximum supply voltage range of 15V allows it to support up to 500mA transmit/receive current and up to 150mA shutdown current. The device comes ready with an onboard logic circuit to provide five different sleep modes. In low power consumption mode, the transceiver can reduce its consumption by about one tenth. It also has a thermal lock protection feature which triggers when the junction temperature reaches the set threshold limit.The LTC1384IN#PBF features built-in protection against Electro-Static Discharge (ESD). Its ESD protection up to +/-15 kV allows the device to work in harsh environments with a high probability of ESD events. It is also ideal for driving RS-485 networks, which require ESD protection.The working principle of the LTC1384IN#PBF is based on switching a pair of matched DMOS transistors. When the ENABLE line is asserted, the transistors are turned on and the power is applied to the external network, including the bias network and the output buffer. When the ENABLE line is de-asserted, the transistors are turned off and the output buffer is disconnected from the external network. The slew rate control is adjustable and can be set from low to high. The adjustable slew rate allows the signal to slowly transition between high and low states, reducing the probability of bit errors.
