The LTC1609ISW#PBF is an ultra low power, low voltage analog-to-digital converter (ADC) from Linear Technology, specifically designed for data acquisition in medical, consumer electronic and industrial applications. The device is ideal for applications where accuracy, power and ease of implementation are important. The device is capable of digitizing analog signals in the range of 0V - 2.5V up to 16-bit resolution with a sample rate of up to 500kSps. The LTC1609ISW#PBF is designed to be high performance, ultra-low power and low-voltage ADC for data acquisition systems. It features a low power, flexible temperature sensor input and an onboard 1.5V reference. It features an on-chip, low power reference and temperature sensor, allowing gain and offset errors to be measured and corrected. The low-power standby mode consumes only 550nA, while the low-power A-D conversion mode only consumes 600μA. The key features of the LTC1609ISW#PBF include: 16-bit resolution, a single-ended programmable gain amplifier (PGA) with gains of 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16, low power A/D conversion mode of 600μA, and a sample rate of up to 500kSps. It also features a programmable delay for settling time, allowing users to reduce power consumption by waiting to begin conversions until the noise from the device has subsided. The working principle of the device is based in the ratiometric principle, wherein the analog signal is converted to a digital signal by taking the ratio of the input voltage to the voltage at the reference node. The device works with two internal operational amplifiers (OPAMPs) with one of the OPAMPs as a negative feedback for the reference and the other for the input signal. The output of the PGA is compared to the reference voltage. The difference between the reference and the output of the PGA is integrated by the on-chip comparator, and the next higher bit is sent to the shift register when the integrated voltage reaches a certain threshold voltage. The ADC function can be optimized by controlling the speed of conversion, by providing the appropriate settling time before starting the conversion and by programming the appropriate gain. The output data format can be programmed as either right justified or offset binary.
