The LTC1682CMS8 #PBF is a step down switching regulator application which utilised a synchronous current-mode architecture. This feature ensures a fast, and user adjustable transient response. Its specific feature includes low quiescent current, very low output voltage noise and ripple, excellent thermal performance and easy control loop implementation.

The LTC1682CMS8 #PBF is a switching regulator that is mainly used to regulate microprocessors, memory and FPGA supplies. Its high efficiency switching topology, powers large loads with a minimum bill of materials. This can result in small packaged solutions, or large open loop solutions. Typical applications include computing, networking and consumer industrial markets.

The regulator consists of an input voltage regulator, a synchronous MOSFET switch, an inductor and a low output voltage capacitor.

The input voltage regulator regulates the input voltage. When the voltage applied to the input exceeds the voltage regulator turn on voltage, the output of the voltage regulator is turned on and the voltage at the switching MOSFET gate is fired up. This will cause the synchronous MOSFET to begin conduction.

The synchronous MOSFET is used to switch the full regulated current at a set frequency. When a continuous load is applied on the output of the regulator it will cause the frequency to increase, allowing for a much more efficient operation. The frequency can be adjusted to allow for high efficiency operation at different loads. The LTC1682CMS8 #PBF can also be used in dynamic PWM applications, allowing for a reduction in output ripple at light loads.

The inductor captures the energy from the input and stores it as a magnetic field. When the switch turns off, this energy is released from the inductor in the form of a peak current, which is then buffered by the output capacitor. This provides a regulated output voltage at the load.

The low output capacitor of the LTC1682CMS8 #PBF is responsible for providing a low output ripple, a low output impedance and low output voltage noise. Due to its fast response time, a single low output capacitor can provide a regulated voltage output at various loads.
