The LTC1710CS8, a symmetric low-side power switch, is a member of a unique series of integrated power distribution switches, load drivers and voltage monitoring ICs that delivers efficient and cost-effective power management solutions. These power switches and load drivers provide an ideal solution for a variety of applications from discrete power MOSFET drivers and redundant switch controllers to power supply monitoring. The latest chip in the LTC family, the LTC1710CS8, was designed to optimize control of low-side switch applications such as voltage rail task switching, synchronous rectifiers, isolated-DC/DC converters and load switching. This document will discuss the application field of the LTC1710CS8 and its working principle.
Linear Technology’s LTC1710CS8 is designed to be used in a wide variety of low-side power switch applications requiring precise control of the voltage excursion. This integrated device features pin-selectable current and voltage limit protection, low power dissipation, and an on-chip startup control with external P-channel MOSFETs. It features an integrated linear current regulator, an adjustable current-limit circuit, a voltage monitoring circuit, an internal logic circuit, and an on/off control circuit. The inherent temperature compensation in the device provides a safe operating temperature range for the power switch, thereby protecting the system from thermal overload.
The LTC1710CS8 is a symmetric power switch that utilizes all-N-channel MOSFETs. It requires a single supply voltage, 16V to 30V, for the supply voltage and an enable voltage, typically +5V to enable the load. The integrated over-current and over-voltage protection circuitry protect the load from damage due to excessive currents or voltages. It is further protected from high junction temperature by an internal temperature monitor. The integrated P-channel MOSFETs reduce external component count and greatly simplify overall design.
The LTC1710CS8 is designed to be used mainly in power switch applications requiring high efficiency and low power dissipation. It is also suitable for use in measuring current and voltage in various applications such as battery charging, motor control, communication interface, automotive electronics, and industrial applications. The on/off control signal can be varied in order to adjust the current-limit and voltage-limit thresholds. The on/off control signal is an input to both the internal logic circuit and the internal junction temperature monitor. The internal logic circuit monitors the current and voltage limits and generates an enable output signal. The enable output signal is available for driving external P-channel MOSFETs. The on/off control signal is also input to the internal junction temperature monitor. This allows the device to turn off at higher temperatures, thus protecting the load from thermal overload.
The internal linear current regulator operates over a range of 0V to 500mV, providing a precise output voltage independent of temperature, load and supply variations. The linear current regulator can be set using a single resistor and can be adjusted to supply a precise current limited voltage output. In addition, the voltage monitoring circuit has an adjustable threshold of up to 30V, allowing for the protection of high voltage connected components.
The LTC1710CS8 provides an efficient and cost-effective solution for low-side power switch applications. The device offers an integrated current regulator, voltage monitoring circuit, internal junction temperature monitoring, as well as an integrated P-channel MOSFET. The device can be tailored to a variety of applications from discrete power MOSFET drivers to redundant switch controllers and power supply monitoring. The voltage monitoring circuit can ensure system protection by preventing the output voltage from going over a pre-set threshold, while the temperature monitor will ensure protection of the load by shutting off the device in the event of thermal overload.
