Application of LTC1871EMS-1#PBF

The LTC1871EMS-1#PBF contains high-side and low-side MOSFET drivers, supports synchronous or non-synchronous rectification, and can be used in a buck, boost, or inverting topology. The device can operate in either continuous or discontinuous conduction modes, and is well suited for automotive and general purpose applications. It’s a highly efficient step-down DC-DC solution that operates in applications with input voltages as high as 36V. It is particularly useful in high voltage DC/DC conversion from 12V and 24V battery sources.

The wide input voltage range and internal synchronous MOSFET drivers reduce power consumption, thereby improving efficiency. Using the LTC1871EMS-1#PBF eliminates the need for external synchronous rectifier MOSFETs, thus providing cost savings and board space savings.

The device features a 200kHz switching frequency, programmable over-voltage reset thresholds, adjustable soft-start and operating frequency, programmable slew rate for loop response, short-circuit protection when used with external current sensing elements, and cycle-by-cycle current limit. It is provided in a thermally enhanced 3mm x 3mm 16-lead DFN package with a guaranteed junction temperature range of -40°C to +125°C.

Working Principle of LTC1871EMS-1#PBF

The LTC1871EMS-1#PBF controller consists of an internal high-side and low-side MOSFET driver, respectively referred to as SWL and SWL. The device features a fixed frequency, peak current mode architecture. The current sense pin inputs the voltage developed by an external current sensing element, which then controls the output voltage.

The operation of the controller is based on a fixed frequency oscillator. When the enable pin of the device is driven high, the oscillator is active and the controller starts switching the external MOSFETs at the on-time. The off-time is adjusted to control the output voltage. The output voltage is sensed by the current sense pin and the peak current limit threshold is adjusted accordingly.

The oscillator frequency is controlled by an external digital signal. The enable pin is used to activate the oscillator. The enable pin is used to enable or disable the oscillator and the soft start pin is used to program the soft start time. Lastly, the voltage sense pin is used to detect the output voltage.

When the enable pin is high, the oscillator starts and the controller switches the external MOSFETs at the programmed frequency. The off-time is adjusted to control the output voltage. The current sense pin inputs the voltage developed by an external current sensing element, which then controls the output voltage.

The LTC1871EMS-1#PBF is a high-efficiency, single MOSFET controller that is ideal for applications requiring high voltage input regulation. The device is easy to use and is a cost-effective solution for a wide range of applications.
