Data Acquisition - Analog to Digital Convertors (ADC)

Analog to digital convertors (ADC) are used in applications such as data acquisition of sensing signals, analysis of biological signals, and measuring parameters in industrial processes. This is a basic function of modern embedded systems as they require a degree of analog-to-digital conversion when performing their tasks. One ADC component of note is the LTC2305IMS#TRPBF and its associated application fields and working principles. The LTC2305IMS#TRPBF is a 12-bit, 1-channel, low power, successive approximation register (SAR) ADC that features a 1.6nV/rtHz on-board input noise. This noise performance is unmatched with any other ADC part and enables designers to achieve noise-free signal conversions. The LTC2305IMS#TRPBF features a wide range of features to aid in the data acquisition process. For example, it has a very low offset voltage which reduces the need for calibration when measuring signals in the sub-microvolt range. It has a wide input voltage range from 0 V to 3.6 V which makes it ideal for measuring a wide range of signals. The built in Safety Isolation Interface (SII) feature helps to reduce EMI as it reduces the input capacitance to the ADC and hence improves accuracy. This makes the LTC2305IMS#TRPBF suitable for use in low EMI environments.The LTC2305IMS#TRPBF is designed using a “Pipelined SAR” architecture which consists of a charge redistribution “Sample & Hold” stage followed by a SAR stage and a digital filter. This architecture helps to reduce power consumption while providing a high level of accuracy and relatively fast sampling rates. The first stage of the LTC2305IMS#TRPBF is the sample and hold stage. This stage allows the conversion to begin in the shortest possible amount of time. This stage uses a low current level to hold the signal until the conversion is complete. This is followed by the SAR stage which is used to measure the signal by comparing it to the reference voltage. The output of the SAR stage is then filtered by the digital filter to reduce noise from the signal before the final conversion result is obtained. In conclusion, the LTC2305IMS#TRPBF is a 12-bit ADC suitable for applications where low power, output noise and a small package size is required.
