Introduction

The LTC3701EGN#PBF is a high efficiency, low voltage, DC/DC switching power controller that allows a wide range of power supply architectures such as a buck or a buck/boost. It is available in an 8-pin SOIC package and can operate over an input voltage range of 4V to 18V. The LTC3701EGN#PBF device features both a high power stage capable of delivering up to 18V at the output up to 5A and a low power stage capable of delivering up to 15V at the output up to 250mA.

Application Field

The LTC3701EGN#PBF is primarily used in applications such as telecom equipment, automotive/industrial, audio/video and consumer electronics. The device is ideal for systems that require highly efficient and seamless power ramp up and down, in applications, such as multi-rail (converter-switcher) supplies, power supplies, battery charger, and other power applications requiring multi-rail (converter-switcher) outputs. In particular, it is well suited for high-performance and high-efficiency power architectures that require very small board area, quiet operation, and superior thermal performance.

Working Principle

The LTC3701EGN#PBF is designed to control the output of a DC/DC switching power supply. Its internal pulse width modulation (PWM) architecture operates over a wide input voltage range and uses the frequency of the switching supply to generate the required amount of current. The device has an external Vcc sensing pin that allows it to sense the voltage across the switching MOSFETs and uses an internal compensation network to control the current. This allows the LTC3701EGN#PBF to accurately adjust the output voltage and current in response to changes in the input voltage and load. The output voltage is adjustable and the user can choose between minimum and maximum values.

The switching frequency can be adjusted to achieve the optimal efficiency, thermal performance and noise performance. It can run up to 1MHz frequency and can maintain a switching frequency of 800kHz or lower. The user can adjust the frequency of operation by selecting the proper number of turns of a program resistor. The output overvoltage protection feature can be enabled to protect the system from output voltage and current overshoots due to load transients.

The LTC3701EGN#PBF also offers programmable Slew rate, which can be used to reduce the output voltage ripple and Noise. Another useful feature of the LTC3701EGN#PBF is its Output discharge pin, which can be used to discharge the output capacitors when the device is disabled and power is removed from the system, assuring a safe start-up after shutdown.

The device provides an enable pin that can be used to power down the system and put the output in a low-power state when the system is not in use. The device also has a Thermal shut down (TSD) pin that will shut down the device in the event of an over temperature condition.
