Introduction

The LTC3722IGN-2 is a dual synchronous, step-down switching controller with integrated control, drive and protection circuitry that can be used to create two independent, regulated dc-dc supplies. The soft-start and frequency foldback capabilities, along with the integrated driver transistor and synchronous rectifier enable operation at wide input voltage ranges, a high-efficiency, low-cost operation, and the ability to handle high-output current applications. This application note describes the working principle and application field of the LTC3722IGN-2.

Working Principle

The LTC3722IGN-2 is an integrated dual synchronous, step-down switching controller dedicated to creating two fixed-frequency step-down converters. As a voltage regulator, the LTC3722IGN-2 has two independent output channels with a maximum output current of up to 8A each. The LTC3722IGN-2 integrates several features that make it suitable for many different applications like dual-rail supplies, high-current loads, and high-efficiency systems. The dual output of the LTC3722IGN-2 operates in a synchronous mode, ensuring that each output works as a fixed-frequency step-down converter. A voltage feedback path monitors output voltage and requires the use of an error amplifier for each output. This amplifier gives the switch controller the necessary information to adjust its output voltage by controlling the duty cycle of the output switches. The output frequency can be programmed between 100 kHz and 700 kHz using the CSPI interface. In order to ensure high system efficiency, the LTC3722IGN-2 supports voltage mode control with a maximum duty cycle of up to 95%. The voltage loop is optimized using both peak current mode (PCM) control and average current mode (ACM) control. In addition, the LTC3722IGN-2 can be configured to operate as a Multi-Phase converter, allowing it to be used in applications where high output current or high power density are needed.For safety and protection, the LTC3722IGN-2 features an integrated soft-start circuit, an over-voltage protection circuit, and an under-voltage lockout circuit. Over-temperature protection keeps the device from getting too hot, making it suitable for applications with high-power requirements. In addition, the LTC3722IGN-2 supports a separate pin for over-current protection, which is used to trip the switch controller upon detecting an over-current condition.
