The LTC3856IFE (Integrated FET Controller with Enhanced Transient Response and Extended Output Voltage Range) is a PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) voltage regulator and DC-DC switching controller. It is designed to provide a regulated output voltage with excellent tolerance to input voltage and output current transients, with output voltage levels ranging from 1.2 V to 19 V.
The LTC3856IFE is versatile, offering selectable switching frequency, programmable maximum duty cycle and overcurrent and overvoltage protection. It supports a wide range of output voltage levels accessible through external sense resistors and utilizes phase-lock, burst mode operation for improved efficiency and power saving when the load is light.
The LTC3856IFE consists of a pulse-width modulated (PWM) switching controller, which includes a voltage mode error amplifier, two overvoltage comparators, one current comparator and a clock oscillator. A high-side MOSFET is driven with an adjustable shoot-through frequency to reduce crossover current, while a low side driver is included for use with synchronous rectifying MOSFETs.
The PWM control loop regulates the output voltage by comparing the sensed output voltage to the voltage setpoint. The output voltage is sensed using an external divider on the output side of the circuit, while the PWM duty cycle is varied in order to keep the output voltage at the setpoint.
When the output voltage rises above or falls below the desired level, the PWM duty cycle increases or decreases, as required, to keep the output voltage at the setpoint. The advantage of this technique is that the output voltage is held stable even if the input voltage fluctuates or if the output current is drawn in long pulses.
In addition to the PWM control scheme, the LTC3856IFE helps to ensure the system’s stability by incorporating current and overvoltage protection circuits. The overvoltage protection circuit is activated when the output voltage exceeds the setpoint, while the overcurrent protection prevents excessive current from damaging the circuit.
The LTC3856IFE is suitable for a variety of applications, such as powering communications equipment, automotive systems, industrial and medical applications, and more. It is designed to offer high performance, high efficiency, and excellent tolerance of system-level voltage and output current transients.
