The Linear Technology LTC3859AHFE is a step down switching regulator that is designed to regulate the output voltage of other supplies with up to 60A output current. This high efficiency, programmable step down regulator utilizes an analog-controlled approach to voltage regulation with advanced loop compensation and switching frequency control, designed to minimize component size while providing robust performance.
LTC3859AHFE is a synchronous step down DC/DC converter with integrated power switches and synchronous rectification. It has an input voltage range from 4.5V to 30V and is able to output voltages as low as 0.9V for applications such as Processors, ASICs and FPGAs. The core of the LTC3859AHFE works as follows; the voltage applied to the input pins is Set-Point regulated using a peak current mode control loop. The Drain when present, supplies the inductor current to regulate the output voltage at the set level. Additionally, a “Transition-Mode” MOSFET switch works in parallel to adjust the peak inductor current, and thereby providing efficient operations around the entire load.
The LTC3859AHFE has a wide range of features, with which designers can configure the Performance of their regulator. The two main features are the switching frequency and the current-limit level. The PWM frequency of the LTC3859AHFE can be set anywhere between 250KHz to 1.75MHz, allowing for a good compromise between power converter size, efficiency and stability.The second feature is the current limit; this is the maximum current that the regulator can output before the overheating protection is activated. This feature is essential for protecting against shorts or connection faults that could otherwise create serious damage.
The LTC3859AHFE has been designed to provide greater control on the voltages and currents present in the power supply. It achieves this by implementing both current monitoring and switching frequency control. Current monitoring allows the user to determine the instantaneous output current and monitor its value over time, in order to ensure that the system is operating within a safe power level. Additionally, frequency control ensures that an appropriate switching frequency is chosen for each load, thus achieving an optimal balance between efficiency and power conversion size.
The LTC3859AHFE is an ideal IC for applications that require step down voltage regulation, such as regulators for batteries, microcontrollers, and FPGAs. It is designed to combines linear regulation accuracy and efficiency with the ease of an analog control approach.
