LTC3862 is a kind of DC-DC switching controllers. It is a high performance 2nd-generation digital power delivery controller designed to operate with either isolated or non-isolated dc-dc converters and synchronous rectification converters in low power applications, driven by an expanding market of low cost controllers. The device also provides adjustable soft start, write-enable and clock synchronization, ensuring dynamic load current balancing, while providing effective on-board protection.
The key feature of the LTC3862 is a 400kHz high frequency 2nd-generation digital control loop, providing superior performance and transient response. This high frequency control loop eliminates uncertainties in the current-sense resistor and over current protection. Furthermore, the LTC3862 features an adjustable output voltage from 0.8V to 5.5V, output current up to 10A, and a high operating frequency up to 1MHz.
To ensure safety, the LTC3862 incorporates an integrated self-healing current-limit protection mechanism that senses the output current and shuts down the converter if the output current exceeds a pre-set level. Moreover, the LTC3862 is also equipped with an adjustable undervoltage lockout and a programmable minimum on-time. It also supports sequential floor current and floor voltage independent of each other.
The wide valid input voltage range, adjustable output voltage range and adjustable frequency allows the LTC3862 to be used in a variety of applications, such as telecom, industrial, medical and automotive applications. Examples of applications that could benefit from the use of the LTC3862 are switch-mode power supplies, battery chargers, dc-dc converters, power consoles and precision power systems.
The working principle of LTC3862HFE-2 is quite simple and straightforward. When an input voltage is applied, the device immediately applies the pre-programmed output voltage and begins operating in pulse width modulation (PWM) mode. During this time, the device continuously monitors its output for changes in conditions, such as voltage, current and temperature. If any of these conditions exceeds the specified limit, the device will shut down. If the conditions fall below the thresholds, the LTC3862HFE-2 will gracefully cycle back on.
In addition to the basic protection functions, the device also doubles as a current monitoring and compensator circuit. This allows the device to accurately detect the load current and modulate its output voltage accordingly. It also includes an adjustable soft start feature that helps to reduce the start-up current and make the transition to steady state operation smoother. The device is also capable of managing a variety of challenges encountered in power supplies, including dc-dc conversion, voltage and current regulation, overload protection, and more.
