The LTC®3864HMSE#PBF is part of Linear Technology\'s family of PMIC – Voltage Regulators – DC DC Switching Controllers. The LTC3864 is a current mode synchronous step-down controller featuring two Multi-Phase Controllers, which reduce input ripple, decrease PCB area, reduce output capacitor size and lower EMI. This device operates with input voltages of 4.8V to 28V and maintains 2.5V to 12V output voltages at currents up to 30A.The LTC3864HMSE#PBF features an input voltage feed-forward design to provide tracking of the output voltage to the voltage divider on the input with an accuracy of ±0.75%. This feature reduces the output capacitor size by eliminating the need for a large error amplifier. The LTC3864HMSE also offers shared control off time and pre-biased start up without no sequencing, reducing design complexity and allowing for further power and cost reductions.The key applications for the LTC3864HMSE#PBF are in secondary stable power sources that require high efficiency, minimum noise and fast transient response such as battery powered applications, triple output power supplies, mobile device chargers, and automotive, avionics and industrial applications.The main working principle of the LTC3864HMSE#PBF is to direct current from the input power source, to the output with an adjustable level of current or voltage. It takes input current and voltage and then adjusts the voltage and current accordingly to maintain the desired power output. This is all accomplished by the use of internal, high side, and low side power switches.The internal high and low side power switches are power MOSFETs that control the direction of current flow from the input power source to the output. The switches are enabled and disabled by two dedicated pins, the high side switch pin, and the low side switch pin, and the output voltage is controlled through the voltage reference bias pin. Additionally, the device also offers a power good output that helps signal when the output voltage is outside of preset limits.In order to optimize the switching of the high and low side switches, the LTC3864HMSE also integrates a programmable digital multiplier and an adaptive frequency control (AFC). The AFC helps control the frequency response of the controller based on input and output voltages, current and temperature, to maximize efficiency at varying loads.Overall, the LTC3864HMSE offers an efficient and easy to design solution for applications requiring high power, such as those in the automotive, avionics and industrial markets. The Multi-Phase design helps reduce output capacitor size and offers consistent operation with minimal noise. It also features a power good output pin to signal when the output voltage is outside preset limits.
