PMIC - Hot Swap Controllers
The LTC4230IGN#PBF is a controller circuit which belongs to the category of PMIC - Hot Swap Controllers. This is an integrated circuit which allows smooth power delivery and dynamic power controlling in circuits, especially within systems where sudden current changes are expected. It is a special type of PMIC that is used to prevent faulty and scattered power-drop or overloads.
It reduces the chances of erratic behavior in circuits by limiting the voltage and current output despite sudden current changes from the output terminal. It is available in the market with an inbuilt p-channel MOSFET which can manage a maximum output current of 14A with an input voltage range from 4.75V to 24V. When the LTC4230IGN#PBF is energized, it provides an output voltage of 0.629V with a tiny current output of 44µA.
Underperforming power sources or isolated power imbalances can cause circuit damage if not monitored and eliminated. This is the exact purpose of the LTC4230IGN#PBF hot swap controller. It is a precision gate circuit which acts as a buffer between the power source and the load to protect against power surges while, simultaneously, enabling fast and reliable power delivery. It is designed to withstand over-voltage, over-load and short-circuits.
The LTC4230IGN#PBF operates the power source device for a maximum supply voltage of 8V. It monitors and holds the voltage level below the maximised rating through an adjustable, internal threshold (UP/DN pin). The current is then reduced using threshold voltage, preventing voltage rise and taking around 100µs to reset to the desired level. This controller is, therefore, also perfect for hot plugging operations as it can keep a check on the current even after power plugging and unplugging. The reset pins of this circuit are connected with a capacitor which is tasked with storing a certain voltage and discharging it after a certain period of time.
The LTC4230IGN#PBF block diagram consists of 3 sub-circuits: over-volt and over-load protection circuit, open circuit protection circuit, under-voltage protection circuit, and minimal current consumption circuit. The over-volt and overload protection circuits perform the preliminary task of limiting the output voltage as well as current to the required level preventing any kind of damage due to transient response. Open circuit protection prevents current source from entering the device when there is no output load attached. The internal delay is provided by the under-voltage protection circuit which helps to reset the power source carrier device output voltage when there are under-voltage situations such as plugging and unplugging of the power source. Finally, the minimal current consumption circuit is responsible for consuming a very low current of 44µA when the IC is energized.
The LTC4230IGN#PBF controller enables very efficient and uniform operations in systems that are beyond the capability of traditional power management ICs. Its wide range of features makes it an ideal choice for applications including high current buffer operations, inrush current limiting, soft start applications, minor load current balancing, hot plugging operability, and pre-charge control.
