This device combines DC to DC and AC to DC switching power management solutions in one package. The LTC4258CGW#PBF supports IEEE 802.3af and IEEE 802.3at Power over Ethernet (PoE) standards. It is specifically designed to support the 13W requirement for IEEE 802.3af PoE and 25.5W requirement for IEEE 802.3at PoE. The LTC4258CGW#PBF provides efficient power distribution to endpoints such as IP phones, wireless access points and other IEEE-compliant endpoints which need one or more DC power sources.The LTC4258CGW#PBF is able to detect the IEEE PoE signaling, voltage and current level, and apply power as appropriate. It provides a single-stage DC-DC converter with up to 85% efficiency, and also provides complete protection against cable faults and overload conditions. The LTC4258CGW#PBF POE controller is available in a 3mm × 3mm 16-lead QFN package with an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. Its feature set allows it to handle both 12V and 24V DC input without requiring any software interaction.The LTC4258CGW#PBF is a cost-effective and easy-to-use solution for creating PoE solutions for any type of networked endpoint. The device supports detection and classification of the IEEE 802.3af/at devices with a low-cost, low-power solution that is able to negotiate the best possible power level for a given endpoint. The LTC4258CGW#PBF features integrated MOSFET drivers with current-limited output that supports up to 25W on a standard CAT-5 cable. The device also provides fault protection in the event of an overload, short circuit or extended cable. The device also supports autonomous undervoltage lockout, automatic reset and output current monitoring. The output current monitoring feature enables precise control of power drawn by the PoE PoE device, increasing efficiency and maintaining compliance with IEEE 802.3af/at PoE standards.The LTC4258CGW#PBF also features a temperature monitor pin that allows the system designer to monitor the internal die temperature of the device.The PoE output is achieved with a high-efficiency single-stage DC-to-DC converter.
