Introduction to LTC4089EDJC-1#TRPBFThe LTC4089EDJC-1#TRPBF is a complete system power solution from Linear Technology and is part of their PMIC – Battery Chargers family. It is a highly integrated and efficient single-cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer battery charger with auto-discharge and automatic power switchover. It integrates a low Rds(on) pass MOSFET and other components necessary to charger and switch one battery cell and/or USB power sources. The LTC4089EDJC-1#TRPBF operates as current source for charging a single-cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer battery from an input source, selectable to be system power (VBAT), USB power or an external power supply. The external power MOSFET turns ON and OFF automatically and regulates the output voltage and current in order to charge the battery.Application FieldThe LTC4089EDJC-1#TRPBF is designed for single-cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer battery sensing, switching and charging applications and is suitable for a wide range of system power solutions. It is particularly suitable for mobile applications requiring smart integration of multiple power sources such as USB, Adapter and Battery, as well as applications that require system power control, such as mobile phones, calculators, portable data loggers and game consoles.The applications include charging the battery from wall adapters +USB, wall adapters +USB +Battery, wall adapter, USB and wall adapter +USB +Adapter. It can also be used as switching regulator to switch system power between VBAT up to 4.2V, USB up to 5.3V, adapter up to 8V and adapter +USB up to 10V.Working PrincipleThe LTC4089EDJC-1#TRPBF operates as a current source for charging the single-cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer battery from one of the three selectable input sources, VBAT, USB and system power. Additionally, it features an auto-discharge circuit for pre-charging a discharged battery and an automatically controlled external power MOSFET that regulates the system output voltage and current for charging the battery.The battery charging current is adjustable from 100mA to 1.2A using two external resistors. Monitoring the VBAT voltage enables the voltage-feedback loop to turn the external power MOSFET on and off, thus maintaining the battery voltage within the desired range while charging. A programmable overtemperature protection prevents battery overcharging when the die temperature rises above the ambience temperature.The LTC4089EDJC-1#TRPBF also includes an auto-discharge circuit that allows it to discharge a discharged battery before initiating the charging process.
