LTC4261IGN#TRPBF Application Field and Working Principle

The Linear Technology LTC4261IGN#TRPBF is a Hot Swap controller designed for high side current sensing. This integrated circuit is intended to be used for controlling the power for supply and failure management for systems and cards on large backplanes. The Hot Swap controller features low external component count, wide current range from microamps to milliamps, and fast transient response. The Hot Swap controller is designed to protect loads from in-rush current and overcurrent.

Application Field

The LTC4261IGN#TRPBF Hot Swap controller is designed for the power management for applications such as telecom systems, bus switches, storage systems, server motherboards, and other device applications with large power backplanes. The Hot Swap controller is suitable for applications that require an I2C interface to control the inrush current, over current and power sequencing. It provides double protection on power control circuits through its low voltage detection, thermal shutdown, and reverse current protection.

Working Principle

The LTC4261IGN#TRPBF Hot Swap controller is able to control supply voltage levels in a predetermined range, prevent short circuits, and provide protection against circuit overload by controlling in-rush current and overcurrent conditions. The over-current fault trip and hold times are adjustable, and VOUT can be adjusted through an I2C control interface. The Hot Swap controller enables in-rush current limitation and protects the load from overcurrent faults, enabling power supplies to be safely inserted and removed without disrupting the system operation.

The Hot Swap controller consists of a fail-on-overload circuit, an overvoltage (OV) protection circuit, and an external N-channel MOSFET controlled by a drive circuit. The OV circuit provides overvoltage protection by using the linear regulator control loop to allow a very small inrush current to ground. The external P-channel MOSFET is controlled by the Hot Swap controller, and operates within the FET safe operating area by controlling the gate voltage. The LTC4261IGN#TRPBF Hot Swap controller provides fast transient response, protecting a downstream load from high inrush currents and overcurrent faults.
