The LTC4267CDHC-3#PBF is a full featured Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) controller designed to enable the standardization of PoE systems. The PoE controller integrates two distinct power cycle stages, an IEEE 802.3af classification stage and an IEEE 802.3bt pre-standard classification stage, enabling the development of IEEE 802.3bt-compliant powered devices.

The controller offers two polarity (non-inverting and inverting) power-supply switch configurations and four sequence/timing options to allow for a variety of different applications. Additionally, the integrated switch IC offers a low on-resistance (7 mΩ) allowing for low voltage drops and higher efficiency, along with improved thermal performance. The LTC4267CDHC-3#PBF includes the industry-leading LTC4266CDHC-3#PBF integrated MOSFET switch and requires only one external MOSFET for a complete PoE system.

Working Principle

The PoE controller integrates two distinct power cycle stages to support both the IEEE 802.3af and IEEE 802.3bt standards. The controller performs a classification of the Powered Device first, and then extracts power by current sourcing or sinking, based on the detected classification. The LTC4267CDHC-3#PBF is designed to handle up to two external pairs, which can be driven by either sourcing or sinking current.

During the classification stage of IEEE 802.3af and 802.3bt, the external line and short-circuit detection circuit works in conjunction with the onboard microprocessor to distinguish the line type and enables power sourcing. During the power cycle, the internal circuit monitors the line voltage and current rise time, checks for obsolete PDs, and enables the power switch for up to four stages.
