Introduction
The LV5680P-E is a special purpose Voltage Regulator from STMicroelectronics. It is an AC-DC buck power converter which enables transformer-less single-stage AC-DC rectification for consumer, industrial, white goods and telecommunications applications. The device features a 26 kHz high frequency operation, low-profile high-capacity inductor, and fast over-current protection, which ensure an excellent level of power efficiency, a cost-effective solution, and reliable operation even under extreme conditions.Application Field
The LV5680P-E is designed for high input power AC-DC rectification in consumer, industrial, white goods and telecommunications applications, such as TVs, audio amplifiers, industrial equipment, HVAC systems, medical systems, instrumentation and data communication systems. The device can operate in applications requiring input powers up to 10W and offers a wide variety of protection features, such as over-current, over-temperature, over-voltage, under-voltage and open-loop protection.The LV5680P-E is also ideal for applications requiring transformer-less power designs, since it can provide high efficiency and reliable operation without the extra cost of a transformer. Additionally, its low-profile, high-capacity inductor is able to deliver high power efficiency in small size applications, resulting in a cost-effective and space-saving solution.Working Principle
The LV5680P-E is a buck power converter with a fixed 26 kHz switching frequency, resulting in a high level of efficiency. This device consists of three main sections: an AC-DC rectifier stage, a high frequency buck converter and a control loop. At the AC-DC rectifier stage, the bridge rectifier circuit is powered by an AC source (universal or single voltage), and charges a bulk capacitance. A low-side MOSFET is used to deliver current into the converter, while an auxiliary winding is employed to provide regulation and soft-start to the rectified output voltage. At the buck converter stage a high frequency topology is applied to the input voltage and a high-capacity, low-profile inductor is used to transfer power from the input to the output of the device. A low-side MOSFET is used to create a variable duty cycle which allows the voltage at the output of the converter to be adjusted as needed. The device operation is regulated by the control loop which comprises of a PWM (pulse width modulation) controller and a voltage feedback loop. The output voltage is monitored by the controller and then the duty-cycle of the low-side MOSFET is adjusted accordingly. Furthermore, the device is equipped with several protection features, such as over-current, over-temperature, over-voltage, under-voltage and open-loop protection.Conclusion
