When properly applied, this PTC resettable fuse eliminates the need for a power-on reset circuit and greatly reduces component count and board space requirements.The LVR005NK is a surface mount device constructed with plastic encapsulated chips, terminal leads, housing, and other components. It has an operating temperature range from -40°C to 105°C and a maximum voltage rating of 28V. The overall size is only 5mm by 5.2mm, making it one of the smallest resettable fuses available.The working principle of the LVR005NK is based on the heating effect of current. The PTC portion of the device consists of a polymer with a positive temperature coefficient which increases its resistance when heated above a specific temperature. The current flow through the PTC heats the device, causing the resistance to increase exponentially. As the resistance of the PTC increases, the current through the device decreases until the current reaches a level at which the thermal runaway of the device is avoided.When the current level that caused the overcurrent protection to activate drops below the "hold current" level, the device cools and its resistance decreases, allowing the normal operating current to flow again. The LVR005NK is designed to "trip" (or shut off) at a current of 8A and to "hold" (or continue to work) at a current of 3A.The advantages of the LVR005NK over a traditional fuse design are numerous. It is much more reliable and better able to handle large currents, while consuming less power. It also eliminates the need for a power-on reset circuit, greatly reducing component count and board space requirements. In addition, it is much easier and less costly to replace if it trips, since it does not need to be soldered back into the board.Overall, the LVR005NK is a great choice for overcurrent, overvoltage and overtemperature protection, eliminating the need for costly and cumbersome power-on reset circuitry.
