PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) Resettable Fuses are thermal-mechanical devices used to protect electrical systems and circuits from overload or short circuit during normal operation. They are commonly referred to as Polyfuses, Self-regulating fuses, SELA fuses or Polymeric Positive Temperature Coefficient (PPTC) fuses. The LVR055S-1 is one of the most commonly used PTC Resettable Fuses, which can be found in a variety of applications such as home appliances, personal computers, power supplies and communication systems.
The LVR055S-1 PTC Resettable Fuse features thermally enhanced construction for superior fuse element performance. It is constructed from a metal conductor, a silicon wafer, and a polymeric layer. The metal conductor is the fuse element that carries the current. The silicon wafer holds the fuse element together and is also responsible for trapping and insulating the polymeric layer from the metallic element.
The polymeric layer is the key component of the PTC Resettable Fuse. This layer is what gives the PTC Resettable Fuse its unique property of thermal self-regulation. The polymeric layer consists of two types of conductive particles; semi-conductive and resistive. The resistance of these particles changes exponentially with temperature, allowing the circuit protection to self-regulate according to the current passing through it.
The working principle of the LVR055S-1 PTC Resettable Fuse is simple. Under normal operation, the polymeric layer resists the current flowing through it enough so that the current does not exceed the pre-set limit. However, if an over-current is detected, the resistance of the particles in the polymeric layer will increase exponentially, causing the current to decrease quickly until it returns to the pre-set limit.
At this point, the PTC Fuse holds the current at the pre-set limit until the fault condition is removed. Once the fault condition is removed, the PTC Fuse will then reset itself automatically and allow the current to flow again as normal. This type of self-regulating fuse allows for improved circuit protection and is useful in applications where high currents and short circuits are frequent occurrences.
