PTC Resettable Fuses
The family of polymeric positive temperature coefficient (PPTC) resettable fuses has been developed in recent years to improve electronic device safety. PTC resettable fuses are also known as polyswitch fuses, and are available in a variety of sizes and configurations to meet different electrical requirements and current ratings. An example of these fuses is the LVR012S, which is designed for sensing and protection of 12V DC circuits.
The working principle of the LVR012S is based on the PPTC thermistor effect. When the device is exposed to an over-current, a heating effect takes place which initiates the self-activation of this polymeric element. This causes an increase of electrical resistance on the circuit, which limits the device from being exposed to further damage or harm.
