Power Factor Correction (PFC) is the process of improving the power factor of an electric system by regulating the phase difference between the input voltage and input current. It is used to reduce the reactive power loss, improve power efficiency and reduce power supply distortion. The LX1563IM is an integrated PFC controller which offers a complete solution for Active PFC applications.

The LX1563IM is an integrated offline PFC controller which includes a high voltage start up circuit, valley current switch and error amplifier in a single package. The device is capable of working with single-phase input and accepts a wide range of voltages from 90VAC to 264VAC. The device combines a PFC converter with a low harmonic current generator and is ideal for applications such as switching power supplies, telecoms, motor drives, lighting, appliances and office equipment.

The LX1563IM includes multiple protection features such as overload protection, open loop protection, thermal protection and UVLO which ensure good protection of the converter and its components. The device also features a built-in current limit function which limits the output current to a preset value. Other features such as oscillator frequency setting and current limit setting increases the flexibility and performance of the converter.

The working principle of the LX1563IM is relatively simple. The device takes input voltage from the mains and then switches it in discrete pulses at a desired frequency. The frequency of operation is determined by the oscillator section of the controller. The pulses are then rectified and the output voltage is regulated by the error amplifier. The error amplifier compares the feedback voltage to a reference voltage and adjusts the pulse widths accordingly. This ensures that the output voltage does not fluctuate above or below the required value. The output current is then controlled by the current limit section which reduces the pulse width accordingly when the output current is higher than the desired value.
