The main application of the M1.5KE62CA is to protect sensitive digital or analog circuitry from voltage transients (also known as voltage spikes). In the event that the rising voltage spike exceeds the clamping voltage (maximum voltage the diode can handle), the diode will clamp the voltage for a short period of time, thus preventing further damage to the circuit.
The M1.5KE62CA utilizes a special technology called the “avalanche effect.” In the event of a voltage transient, the diode’s anode breaks down in an event known as “avalanching.” As electrons start to move, the diode’s current increases dramatically ( quickly ) , causing a predictable and consistent clamping action. This results in a predictable and consistent voltage clamp in most applications. The avalanche effect also reduces ESD sensitivity by providing a steady-state junction voltage, since the avalanche breakdown will occur before an ESD impulse can .
