TVS - Diodes (Transient Voltage Suppression Diodes) represents a variety of semiconductor protection devices used to protect sensitive devices from voltage surges. These diodes clamp the voltage at a rated level and protect electronic circuitry from damaging overvoltage transients like electro-static discharges, lightning, and inductive switching. The MA5KP75CA, by Littelfuse, is a three-terminal unidirectional transient voltage suppressor. This TVS-Diode is designed to protect against lightning-induced transients, DC power rail mismatch and to limit ESD current.

The MA5KP75CA has a working voltage of 75V, while operating at a stand-off voltage of 53.3 volts, and a clamping voltage of 71.8V. It is capable of absorbing up to 100A of lightning transients and up to 8A of ESD shock. The total power dissipation it can handle is 1250W. It is able to handle pulses up to 8/20us without triggering. This TVS-Diode is built on SiO2/Si structure with a doubling layer of silica to ensure reliable protection against severe transient conditions. It has high peak power capability and low capacitance.

With a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +150°C and a high peak pulse power of 3.3kW at 8/20µs, the MA5KP75CA can be used in many different application fields. It is suitable for lightning protection, DC rail mismatch protection, for protection of ESD sensitive components, like MOSFETs, and for any general purpose transient voltage suppression. It can be used for automotive and industrial applications, in power and digital control circuits, in civilian and military aircraft, in medical and elevators.

The MA5KP75CA utilizes an avalanche breakdown process in its working principle. It uses a combination of punch-through technology and an absorptive silicon material to ensure a lower stand-off voltage and a quick response time. The TVS-Diode consists of a number of avalanche-transporting and absorptive elements connected in parallel. This arrangement ensures a fast, low-loss transient protection. It is composed of highly-doped layers, growing from the substrate, each with an increasing critical voltage. When the forward voltage exceeds the voltage level of the layer, the avalanche of electrons starts, and the current is limited to the clamping voltage.

The MA5KP75CA is a great protection device for lightning induced transients, DC rail mismatch, and ESD protection.
