MAC228A4

A TRIAC, which stands for “Triode for Alternating Current”, is a controllable alternating current switch that can be triggered by either polarity. It acts as a bipolarty switch that can be ussed to control a wide range of AC loads. A TRIAC is a three-terminal device with an anode (A), a gate (G) and a cathode (C). It is made from two thyristors connected in an inverse parallel configuration. This allows it to control the current flow either in the positive or negative direction.

The MAC228A4 is an overvoltage and overcurrent protected 4-terminal Triac, specifically designed for use in AC, Industrial, HVAC and Electronics applications. It is a Field-Effect Thyristor (FET) which uses a MOSFET technology combined with a thyristor structure, offering a fast switching time and higher current ratings than traditional TRIACs.

The MAC228A4 offers extremely low leakage current and wide voltage range at more than 650VAC. A built-in thermal shutoff feature ensures the TRIAC permanently turns off when overcurrent occurs. The MAC228A4 also features reverse polarity protection, overvoltage protection and soft gate turn-off protection, ensuring the highest quality and reliability. The operating principle of a TRIAC is similar to that of an SCR and between the two there is a significant difference in the current triggering and illumination. Specifically, in the case of the TRIAC, when a positive gate current is applied to the gate of the TRIAC it triggers the SCR-like action and allows the flow of current. When the gate current is removed, the TRIAC turns off, inhibiting the flow of current. By alternating the gate current of the TRIAC, the flow of current can be controlled, allowing it to act as a switch.

Another distinctive feature of the TRIAC is that only a small voltage across its main terminals is required to trigger it. This is called the Trigger Voltage. The trigger voltage generally ranges from 0.6 V to 1.5 V. This makes it highly reliable and attractive for applications where low voltage triggering is a key parameter. The trigger voltage can however be minimized further by using the built-in protection feature.
