Thyristors - TRIACs

Thyristors - TRIACs are a class of thyristors that are used as switches for higher power applications such as AC motor control, light dimming and industrial automation. TRIACs are bidirectional switches that can conduct current in either direction and provide a relatively low impedance path until the TRIAC is turned off. TRIACs are made of two thyristors connected back to back, each one carrying half of the total current.

A TRIAC consists of two SCR’s or Thyristor’s requiring two gates,main and auxiliary gate. A typical MAC8NG TRIAC is composed of two parallel thyristors connected such that conduction can occur in either direction, by applying suitable gates pulses at the gates in the required sequence. The turn-on as well as the turn-off of the TRIAC is accomplished by a suitable gating signal applied across the main gate and the auxiliary gate leads respectively. The conduction state can be maintained with zero gate current.

A common application of a TRIAC is AC switching, light dimming and circuit control. They are used to control the speed of AC motors, regulate the intensity of light bulbs and as controls for heaters. When a positive gate is applied to the gate, the triac will start to conduct, and the gate voltage needs to stay above the current to keep it conducting. When the gate voltage is below the current, the triac will switch off automatically.
