TVS diodes are protection components used in order to protect sensitive electronic devices from electrical overstress (EOS) and electrostatic discharge (ESD). The MAPLAD18KP16AE3 (hereafter referred to as the MAPLAD) is a unidirectional protective diode which provides bidirectional transient protection. It is suitable for use on data and telecom lines.
The MAPLAD is a bidirectional bidirectional transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diode with excellent surge, ESD, and EFT protection characteristics. It is capable of providing protection against impulses up to 18 kV. It has low leakage current and exceptional thermal stability. The MAPLAD has a Fast Recovery Time-to-Discharge of less than 500 nsec, which is significantly faster than most competing products.
The device consists of a dual N-channel junction connected in parallel. This arrangement ensures excellent surge protection and transient suppression, as well as highly reliable operation. This diode is ideal for use in applications requiring up to 18 kV of surge protection, such as lightning strike protection for buildings and vehicles. It can also be used to protect sensitive electronic components from ESD and EFT discharges.
The MAPLAD is a compact device, measuring just 0.139” x 0.050” x 0.076” in size. It is suitable for use in high-density, double-sided printed circuit boards. The integrated miniaturized package minimizes induction, thermal effects, and parasitics, which helps to reduce power dissipation and improve reliability.
The MAPLAD\'s operating principle is based on the fact that when a high voltage surge is applied to the device, the internal resistance of the diode reduces in order to allow the current to flow through and provide protection to the connected electronic device. The diode is designed such that the current will be displaced into the junction, reducing the surge energy before it can cause any damage to the connected device. The diode will then remain in the low-voltage, low-resistance off-state as long as the surge is present and will return to the high-voltage, high-resistance on-state once the surge has been dissipated.
