The MASMCJ85CA TVS diode is a silicon avalanche diode with a breakdown voltage of 5.5V and a power rating of 85W. The working principle of the MASMCJ85CA is based on the avalanche effect. This happens when the electric field intensity in the weakening depletion layer surpasses a certain level. This is what leads to a highly energetic electron-hole pair collision which then releases a lot of secondary electrons with an energy level greater than the avalanche breakdown voltage. This then leads to a current increase which in turn creates a short-term over-voltage.
The total breakdown voltage of the MASMCJ85CA TVS diode is made up of the peak avalanche breakdown voltage and the junction capacitive voltage. The peak avalanche breakdown voltage is the sum of the junction barrier potential plus the sum of the surface potential. The junction capacitive voltage depends on the rate of change of current. This voltage drop will increase while the ratio of the square root of the rate of change of current to the temperature will decrease.
TVS diodes can also provide surge absorption, and it is this function that is of the utmost importance when protecting high speed data lines. When the surge voltage reaches its peak value, the diode will absorb surplus energy and turn it into heat. This additional energy is then dispersed through the diode, relieving any pressure on the protected device and providing a much higher level of protection.
