TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes are semiconductor devices used to protect low voltage circuits from transient surge voltages that can exceed many times the normal operating voltage. MASMLG40A Working Principle

The MASMLG40A protects electrical circuits from transient voltage surges by acting as a short circuit. As an electrostatic pulse passes through the device, the current increases rapidly causing the voltage across the device to switch to a negative value so as to clamp it at a safe level. Under normal conditions, the device performs as an open circuit and does not interfere with the operation of the circuit.

The device is operated by applying a reverse voltage of between 6V and 36V and then clamping the transient surge current to protect the circuit. The MASMLG40A also has an internal diode to protect the device from reverse polarity surges. The device can handle ESD pulses up to 25kV (HBM) and EFT pulses up to 12A (8/20µs).
