MASMLG78AE3 TVS - Diodes Application Field and Working Principle Installation and Diagnosis

The MASMLG78AE3 is a bidirectional, high-power, silicon-based, transient voltage suppression (TVS) diode. It is used to quickly protect sensitive electronic components and circuits from voltage transients induced by lightning, electrostatic discharge (ESD) and other phenomena.

This diode is commonly found in automotive, communication, computer, consumer, industrial, and medical electronic systems. In these systems, it is often used as an automotive TVS-diode for transient voltage surge suppression.

As an automotive TVS-diode, this device works by conducting the current resulting from an overvoltage event away from the protected circuit. The device does not require any bias current and will not turn on during normal operation. During an overvoltage event, the device will quickly activate, clamping the voltage to a specified level and conducting current away from the protected circuit.

The device operates in two stages: the clamping stage and the conducting stage. During the clamping stage, the device acts as a capacitor, limiting the voltage across it to a pre-determined clamping voltage. During the conducting stage, the device conducts current through it to the ground, clamps the voltage to a predetermined clamping voltage and dissipates power to the ground.

MASMLG78AE3 can be easily installed in any electronic circuit. Typically, it is placed in the power line of the system and connected to the ground line. Installation of the device can be performed using either surface-mount technology or through-hole technology. The installation process is relatively simple.

Although the device is not self-diagnostic, it can be tested and monitored using oscilloscope-based transient voltage fault detection techniques. Oscilloscope probes should be connected to the power supply line and to a test point in the system to monitor the power line for transient voltage events.
