The MASMLJ13CA series is a subminiature, low capacitance, and low signal junction diode designed to protect electronic systems from voltage transients caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD), motors, lightning, and inductive loads. It acts as a voltage-clamping device, absorbing fast electrostatic discharges without conducting the transient current. It can also be used to protect low-impedance circuitry from reverse-voltage and overcurrent conditions.

The MASMLJ13CA is designed for use in 3.3V and 5V logic circuits in laptop, PC, and other consumer electronics applications. It features a two-deck, two-pin surface-mount package operating temperature range of -55°C to +125°C and a high ESD withstand voltage of ± 15kV (HBM).

MASMLJ13CA provides a fast clamping response to ESD events that exceeds the requirements of IEC 61000-4-2 (ESD 15kV contact / 8kV air discharge). It can also provide EMI (electromagnetic interference) protection. Typical applications for MASMLJ13CA include data & communication interface protection, USB & HDMI protection, and protection for antenna ports & HDI.

The ESD clamping mechanism of MASMLJ13CA works on the principle of Zener-breakdown. When the voltage on the anode (supply rail) or cathode (ground rail) exceeds the breakdown voltage of the diode, conduction occurs and a part of the voltage is clamped to the diode’s junction. This occurs due to the avalanche effect where the electrons in the depletion layer of the diode gain the energy required for their jumps over the junction to the other section and thus create conduction.

MASMLJ13CA offers superior protection to circuits with its low capacitance and reverse-voltage tolerance, both of which are essential for high-speed digital circuits.
