MASMLJ40CA Application Field and Working Principle

MASMLJ40CA is a type of TVS diodes, TVS stands for transient voltage suppressor. It comprises of a Mini-MELF package, a glass tubed device and a zener diode. It is used to protect against transient voltage in data and communication line applications like RS-232, RS-485, EIA-422, EIA-423, I2C, etc. It is widely used in automotive, military and aerospace, medical, energy, consumer electronics, industrial and IT applications.

The MASMLJ40CA is a triple-barrier device that provides a high degree of protection against high-level transient voltage blowcurves. It can handle up to 500V of continuous ESD surge, and suppresses transients up to 17V with a typical resistance of 24Ω. This device is designed with over-temperature protection to prevent failures from excessive energy at the input lines. The MASMLJ40CA can be configured in either a series or parallel circuit configuration. In a series configuration, the device is connected in series with two other resistors, with one on each input. In a parallel configuration, the MASML is connected in parallel with two other resistors, one on each input. Once the MASML is installed in the circuit, it will begin to operate as soon as surge voltage appears at either of the input lines. The voltage will increase until it reaches the breakdown voltage of the MASML which is set at 17V for the MASMLJ40CA. At this point, the voltage will be diverted to the other input line and dissipates in the form of a pulse. The duration of the pulse depends on the resistance of the MASML and the amount of voltage transients.
