MASMLJ60A TVS – Diodes Application Field and Working Principle

The multimedia over-voltage protection (MASMLJ60A) TVS – diode is a bi-directional device providing excellent ESD protection for I/O interfaces. The protection TVS-diode is suitable for high reliability applications and provides superior over-voltage handling capability preventing damages to the device that can be caused by reversed voltages or transients on the input/output lines of multimedia applications. It is designed to protect against electrostatic discharges from human body or equipment.

The MASMLJ60A gives high ESD protection up to 20kV contact discharge and 35kV air discharge according to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61000-4-2 standard. The device is also designed to provide protection against voltage transients caused by electrostatic discharging. It features low leakage current as well as low capacitance when in the off-state.

Applications

The MASMLJ60A is ideal for use in protecting low-voltage communication lines such as USB, HDMI, data lines and Ethernet interfaces. The wide over voltage range of this protection diode makes it suitable for devices with high voltages such as computer motherboards, notebooks, printers and LCD/LED displays.

The MASMLJ60A is designed to protect expensive digital systems from ESD and transients. It is commonly used in consumer electronics, automotive, industrial, medical and telecoms systems. Working Principle

The MASMLJ60A utilizes an integrated TVS diode that is equipped with a switched positive-breakover voltage clipper for ESD protection. It is designed to protect equipment from low level ESD induced damage and can handle transient voltages up to the maximum breakdown voltage. The device is composed of a p-n junction for the protection diode and its anode and cathode are the input and output lines of the protected multimedia interface.

When no voltage is applied to the device, no current should flow through it. As soon as a transient voltage is applied, the diode allows for small currents to flow, which is limited by the avalanche breakdown voltage of the protection diode. Once the breakdown voltage is reached, the protection diode switches on. The current will be clamped and the voltage is limited across the protected line.

The MASMLJ60A features a low leakage current and low capacitance when in the off-state, and it offers excellent protection from transients and ESD. It is designed to offer high ESD protection up to 20kV contact discharge and 35kV air discharge according to the IEC 61000-4-2 standard. The low capacitance makes it ideal for protecting data lines in applications where low capacitance is required.
