MAX20051AUD/V+TCLQ is a PMIC - LED Driver product from Maxim Integrated. It combines an inductive step-down switching regulator and a high efficiency, wide operating-temperature, p-channel MOSFET in one package. The regulator operates from 2.3V to 6V input voltage range and 24V switch current limit. It integrates the primary side controller, secondary side driver and a high-side current-sensing resistor to achieve high efficiency and better thermal performance. Additionally, the regulator provides an adjustable voltage between 0.8V to 1.6V.
Application Field
MAX20051AUD/V+TCLQ is designed to drive high-power LEDs in automotive, industrial and consumer applications. The device features low quiescent current, fast transient response, precise output voltage regulation, soft-start and wide dimming range. It enables the user to adjust the output voltage to meet different backlight levels and color temperatures which makes it suitable for different needs by adjusting the voltage of the output.
Furthermore, the device is adjustable for a wide range of power applications, from low-side, single-LED level up to high-side, multi-LED level. Apart from the above, the device is well suited for automotive applications due to its high reliability, compact size, wide operating temperature range, overvoltage lockout, active discharge for GND pin, safety ground fault protection and fast loop response.
Working Principle
The regulator is composed of an inductive step-down converter, a high-side p-channel MOSFET and a linear regulator. The converter operates as a synchronous buck converter configuration where the output is controlled with PWM and the inductor current is sensed to achieve high conversion efficiency. The maximum output current is determined by the external specified switch current limit and the peak inductor current. The output voltage is adjustable through an external resistor divider connected to the regulating pin. When the output voltage is adjusted, the converter will automatically adjust the operating frequency and hence provide the precise output regulation.
Apart from the step-down converter, the device also contains a high-side p-channel MOSFET to provide key features like short circuit, overvoltage and overtemperature protection. It switches on, when the output voltage reaches an adjustable under-voltage level, and it off, when the output is overvoltage or exceeds the set temperature. This device enables to drive high-power LEDs in overcurrent and overtemperature conditions without the need for additional external components.
In addition to the converter and MOSFET, MAX20051AUD/V+TCLQ features a linear regulator. It is designed to work as a boost converter which generates a voltage between 0.7V to 1.6V. This voltage is used to supply the output driver and all remaining circuitry. The linear regulator is a current-mode boost converter with a wide operating range and an adjustable output voltage.
