MAX20078AUE/V+T is a programmable LED driver integrated circuit (IC) (PMIC) specifically designed to provide an efficient, easy to use and highly configurable LED driving solution. This PMIC is designed to drive 8 channels of PWM outputs at 1.8V each. The device operates from a wide input voltage range (2.7V to 28V), and delivers up to 40mA of source current with a duty cycle range of 0.1–100%.PMICs for LED drivers, such as the MAX20078AUE/V+T, are part of a family of devices which allow for efficient and optimized light emission for various applications. They assist with the implementation of multi-LED backlighting, dimming and strobe lighting, as well as other lighting applications requiring intelligent control and brightness.The MAX20078AUE/V+T features a programmable platform that supports multiple single and multi-channel output control modes, including both static and dynamic current level configuration, allowing for smart and efficient LED driving as well as dimming and strobing capabilities. This PMIC also features an internal pulse repetition rate (PRR) generator and current-limit resistors, eliminating the need to externally program those components.The MAX20078AUE/V+T is designed to provide the flexibility, safety and reliability needed for a wide variety of lighting applications such as lighting for transportation, buildings, offices and homes, such as those found in refrigerators, washing machines and other large appliances. Additionally, this device is well suited for lighting in industrial environments and for display applications.The working principle of the MAX20078AUE/V+T is that its PWM outputs are synchronized to the input clock, which is dependent on the PRR generator that is integrated within the device. This generator controls the frequency of the outputs and provides a choice of 6 frequencies from 10kHz to 250kHz.The outputs are individually programmable in order to adjust the brightness of each channel. It is possible to program each channel to operate in either continuous (static mode) or modulated (dynamic) mode, depending on the needs of the application. When in static mode, the current value is determined by the setting of the integrated current-limit resistors. In dynamic mode, the current will be dynamically adjusted by a control signal which is inputted to the device.In addition to the on-board current-limit resistors, the MAX20078AUE/V+T features a low RDS(ON) power MOSFET switch which allows for an optimized switch on/off. This allows for an efficient light output and enables longer operating time by minimizing power loss.Overall, the MAX20078AUE/V+T can be used as an efficient, highly configurable PMIC for LED driving applications. With its programmable platform, multiple output control mode options and safety features, it is well suited for various lighting related applications.
