RF Mixers
A RF (Radio Frequency) Mixer is an active or passive device used to multiply two frequencies, or convert a signal from one frequency to another frequency. Mixers are fundamental to the implementation of modern communications systems, radio receiver or transmitter applications, and other processes that require frequency translation.
MAX2029ETP is a silicon RF mixer from Maxim Integrated products. It is designed to convert a signal from 800MHz to 5GHz.This device is a passive mixer suitable for a wide range of applications including wireless infrastructure, test and measurement, base station and transceiver applications.
Application Field
The MAX2029ETP provides a high performance and low power RF mixer solution for applications from 800MHz to 5GHz. It can be used to match any RF receive channel that requires low noise figure and good third-order inter-modulation distortion. The MAX2029ETP is also suitable for a variety of other applications including wireless infrastructure, base station, transceiver, test and measurement, telecommunications, automotive, medical, and consumer electronics.
Working Principle
The MAX2029ETP RF mixer is a passive single-port architecture. It utilizes a unique active-gate circuit that has no linearity degradation due to its input drive levels, resulting in low distortion outputs for high dynamic range operation. A buffered local oscillator (LO) port is provided to accept differential signals for improved isolation and low power consumption. The LO drive level should be selected to maintain a linear signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) characteristic. This LO drive level signals the mixer into active mixer mode allowing the mixer to work efficiently with low noise figure and distortion levels.
The input signals are then passed through two gain stages, providing adequate signal amplification and enough dynamic range to allow the mixer to reach its linear region. The output signals are then converted to the desired frequency range by the mixer’s passive multiplier. The output stage also provides additional gain and noise figure improvement.
The final mixer output is a low-noise, low-distortion signal suitable for high-precision applications. The MAX2029ETP is fully specified over the industry standard temperature range of -40°C to +85°C.
