The MAX202CDWRE4 is a dual RS-232 driver/receiver designed to meet the requirements of EIA standards RS-232, RS-423, and V.28/V.29. This device is composed of two full-duplex driver / receivers connected in parallel with one common enable control input. The MAX202CDWRE4 features advanced ESD protection of ±15 kV HBM endurance on the RS-232 pins to minimize system level noise and latch-up.

The MAX202CDWRE4 is ideal for use in a wide variety of applications requiring full-duplex asynchronous communication from 5 to 12 V supplies. Some typical applications include data acquisition systems, instruments, modems, inter-process communication, printer/plotter interfaces, and many others.

Working Principle

The MAX202CDWRE4 features two full-duplex RS-232 driver/receiver sections operating independently. Each section provides the interface between an RS-232 port and an asynchronous data communication bus. The function of the transmitter is to convert digital data from the bus into serial data suitable for transmission on the RS-232 line. The function of the receiver is to convert the incoming serial data from the RS-232 line back into digital data suitable for the bus.

The MAX202CDWRE4 features a driver enable/disable control on pin 1 (DE2). When pin 1 is LOW, both transmitters are disabled, and the output of each receiver is in its high impedance state. When pin 1 is HIGH, both transmitters are enabled. The DE2 can also be used to isolate one section from the other.

Power Supply Requirements

The MAX202CDWRE4 operates from a 5-V to 12-V supply, depending on the V/I characteristics of the driver, receiver, and supply voltage. The supply current is typically 30 mA, and the device will operate from single- or split-supply operation.
