RF mixer is a three-port active device that combines two radio frequencies (RF), maintaining a radio frequency constant while changing their respective amplitudes and phases. MAX2032ETP+ is a high dynamic range RF mixer from Maxim. It can be used in radio transmitters and receivers, satellite receivers, test and measurement system, wideband up/down converters, VHF/UHF applications, etc. It works over the frequency range from DC to 6GHz with an LO drive level of 3dBm to 10dBm, providing a conversion gain of 8dB. In addition, it offers a low conversion loss, high linearity, adjustable by external inductors and capacitors, high isolation for LO to RF and LO to IF ports, with integrated harmonic suppresses, and small package size.
The principle of its working can be illustrated as follows: The LO and RF signals are injected into the two distinct ports on the mixer. The LO signal, combined with the RF signal, produces a signal called the sum-frequency along with the difference-frequency term. The difference-frequency term is the output of the mixer and is available at the IF port of the device. Thus, to convert an RF signal to an IF signal, MAX2032ETP+ is used as a single-pole double-throw transfer switch that is opened and shut by the LO signal.
The sum-frequency term is a product of the two mixed signals and is created when the dual tones are combined and subtracted. It is generated at the same frequency as the LO. Though this term is not useful, it needs to be suppressed in order to reduce image rejection. Spot-frequency (SF) and local oscillator leakage suppress (LOL) circuits are used to suppress the SF term.
The first circuit uses amplification together with a resonant response filter that causes a shift in phase and amplitude of the resulting signal. This resonant response of the filter follows an all-pass law, thus passing or rejecting any input frequency equally. The LOL circuit suppresses the LO leakage by providing a 180° phase shift of the LO at the IF port. This 180° phase shift cancels the mixer’s leakage from the RF or LO port, resulting in improved IF port isolation.
