In receiver mode, external voltage is supplied and the receiver will detect a logic 0 or logic 1 depending on the voltage voltage level. On the other hand, in hi-Z bus mode, the transceiver has an open circuit and will not detect or transmit data. Lastly, in driver mode, the internal driver buffer will supply an active voltage to the output.
The MAX212EAG+ also comes with an integrated bus configuration terminal which changes the way two or more transceivers operates simultaneously. The bus configuration terminal can be configured to operate in twisted-pair mode, daisy-chain mode, or single-pair mode. In twisted-pair mode, each channel of the transceiver will operate independently, whereas, in daisy-chain mode, all the channels are joined together and share data. Lastly, in single-pair mode, multiple transceivers are configured together, with one channel of each transceiver connected to the input, and the other channel of each transceiver connected to the output.
