The MAX243CPE is a family of low-voltage, full-duplex transceiver ICs designed for RS-232 asynchronous serial data transmission. Working Principle

The MAX243CPE is a full-duplex, low-voltage transceiver IC that is capable of supporting up to 25 Mbps of data rate. It is designed to meet, and in some cases, exceed the electrical and timing characteristics specified in the EIA/TIA-232-F and other relevant standards.

The MAX243CPE includes two drivers, two receivers, and four level shifters to convert the TTL-level logic signals to the RS-232 levels needed for data transmission. The drivers provide true 5V output logic levels, allowing direct connection to other TTL logic devices. The receiver outputs are active low logic levels and are open-drain, allowing the voltage levels to be pulled low when the receivers detect a valid input signal.

The MAX243CPE also features an Automatic Receive Error Detection (ARED) circuit that checks the accuracy of received data frames. The ARED circuit will detect a wide variety of errors, including parity, framing, and overrun errors, and can optionally be disabled.

The MAX243CPE includes a low-power shutdown mode that will reduce the power consumption of the device when not in use. This mode allows the device to remain in a low-power state while still being able to respond to incoming requests.
