The MAX243EPE+ is a driver, receiver, and transceiver all rolled into one convenient integrated circuit (IC). It is a voltage-level translator designed for use in any high-speed digital systems, including high-speed buses, 2-wire serial and other data communication links. It is ideal for use in power supply systems, especially those using or interfacing with the industrial standard I2C (Inter-Integrated Circuit). This product is designed for optimal performance, with power levels of up to 2.4mA.

The MAX243EPE+ provides four different functions, depending on the voltage levels of your system. It functions as a single-ended receiver (translating from HIGH to LOW), as a single-ended driver (translating from LOW to HIGH), as a half-duplex transceiver (a bidirectional translator which can switch between LOW and HIGH), and as a dual-powered half-duplex transceiver (which can switch between LOW and HIGH and operate both in normal and reverse direction). The MAX243EPE+ can also be used as a level translator for ESD-protected inputs. The MAX243EPE+ allows you to use a common output to drive different types of logic, such as open-collector, push-pull, LVTTL and TTL logic.

The MAX243EPE+ is designed to work at very high frequencies, with a minimum toggle rate of 1MHz at 3.3V, and a minimum toggle frequency of 10MHz at 5V. It also has an extended frequency range of up to 40MHz, depending on the input and output levels. The MAX243EPE+ features a few features which help to ensure reliable operation, such as the use of a high-speed Schottky diode, which lowers the power dissipation and increases the yield, as well as a special foldback rate limit to protect itself from switching high currents.
