The MAX252ACHL is a serial port line driver for RS-232 and CMOS levels. It combines an RS-232 line driver, a CMOS line receiver, and control logic. The MAX252ACHL is pin compatible with the industry standard MAX252 family of products. This application field and working principle make it ideal for many interface applications.
Application Field
The MAX252ACHL line driver is mainly used in industrial control systems, such as MODBUS, SCADA and other industrial control systems. Working Principle
The MAX252ACHL utilizes the well-known RS-232 interface standard, with input/output signals of logic \'0\' equal to -25V and logic \'1\' equal to +5V. It consists of a transmit circuit, a receive circuit, and a control logic circuit. The gather information from TTL logic level and convert it to RS-232 compliant voltages, while the logic low and logic high from RS-232 are converted to TTL level for use in controlling the 200 mA current loops. In comparison to the MAX252 family, the MAX252ACHL\'s higher input frequency and improved noise immunity allow it to be an integrated solution for both high speed data communication and low cost control loops. This also makes it ideal for use in high-speed, high-density applications.
The transmit circuit and receive circuit of the MAX252ACHL consists of a comparator and control logic circuit, which is capable of conversion in both directions. The control logic circuit contains three logic inputs, two control inputs and two outputs, along with various state machine logic. The control logic is used to drive the transmitter and receiver in opposite directions. The receive circuit is composed of an input buffer, a baud rate circuit and a receiver amplifier, all of which are used to produce a transmit data bit, generate a receive clock, and detect incoming data bits.
The input buffer and baud rate circuit are combined in the MAX252ACHL to allow a higher input frequency. The input buffer amplifies a single supply input by a fixed amount, allowing for a much faster data throughput over the RS-232 line. The receive clock is generated from the baud rate circuit and is adjusted to the logic input frequency. This allows the clock to be adapted to the needs of the applications.
The MAX252ACHL also has an improved noise immunity over its predecessor, making it suitable for use in noise-prone industrial environments. The noise immunity is achieved by increasing the switching thresholds of the comparator and control logic circuit, which helps reduce interference to the input and output lines.
